Singa Rangoli: Vijaya Mohan’s ambitious transformation
Singa Rangoli is headed by a dynamic innovator, Vijaya Mohan, who holds the Guinness world record, Malaysian Book of records, 58 Singapore Book of Records and has numerous awards and accolades to her credit. She is the most prominent Rangoli artist in Singapore who has worked extensively and diligently to promote the traditional art of Rangoli in Singapore through art exhibitions, community outreach and educational workshops. She has worked with several prominent leaders in Singapore and together with her team of more than 40 spirited Rangoli artists Vijaya conducts mega community projects involving a wide cross section of the population.

Using contemporary materials combined with traditional designs, Vijaya has modified the traditional Indian art form to adapt to Singapore and incorporated current day values like recycling and sustainability. She has introduced hobbycrafts like sand art rangoli and scratch art rangoli. Amongst her adaptations are waterproof rangolis and rangoli canvas and her rangolis have moved from the floor to the wall to the ceiling. All this development has happened in Singapore, so she proudly labels it as Singa Rangoli. Her current objective is to induce the Singapore youth to participate in Rangoli and carry it forward for future generations.
Vijaya is internationally widely travelled and has conducted exhibitions and workshops extensively overseas. During her travels she took part in Brussels flower carpet in 2022 which was quite similar to Rangoli. Thereafter she became a member of CIDAE (Coordinadora International de Entitdades de Alfambristas de Arte Efimoro)** and participated in many flower carpet programs in Japan, Spain, Mexico, Italy. She has also independently done Rangoli flower carpets in Taiwan, Osaka and in Singapore at the Gardens by the Bay and many other venues.
In recognition of her wide contributions to rangoli and heritage Vijaya received the Stewards of Intangible Cultural Heritage Award from Singapore’s National Heritage Board in 2025.
